Bambu Lab buying guide

We print our own battery holders, meter holders and PACKOUT inserts on a Bambu Lab X2D. A printer won't replace a tool, but it can make the truck neater and cut down on lost and broken gear. This page covers what the X2D is, which materials survive jobsite heat, and how to print safely.

3D-printed battery holder from our shop

Bambu Lab X2D at a glance

Spec X2D (manufacturer specs)
Nozzles Dual: direct-drive main + Bowden auxiliary
Build volume 256 × 256 × 260mm
Max nozzle temp 300°C
Max bed temp 120°C
Heated chamber Up to 65°C
Nozzle sizes 0.2 / 0.4 / 0.6 / 0.8mm

The heated chamber matters for crews: it is what makes tougher, heat-resistant materials like ABS, ASA and some nylons print reliably without warping.

Which material for jobsite parts

Material Heat in a closed truck Notes
PLA Poor; can soften and sag in a hot cab Fine for shop-only parts
PETG Fair Tougher than PLA; OK for shaded spots
ASA Good; UV-resistant Our default pick for truck parts; needs an enclosure and venting
ABS Good Like ASA but less UV-stable
Nylon / CF nylon Very good Strong; must be kept dry; needs hardened nozzle for CF

These are general material properties, not crew notes. A closed truck in Southern California summer can get hot enough to soften PLA. Pick ASA or nylon for anything that lives in the truck.

Good first prints for a crew

  1. Wall-mounted battery holders for the shop and truck.
  2. Meter and tester holders.
  3. Bit and blade organizers that fit PACKOUT bins.
  4. Cable clips and hose hangers.

Our own designs, like the tag engraving jig and the disc holder, are on the laser and 3D page.

Safety notes

  • Fumes: ABS and ASA give off fumes and fine particles while printing. Keep the printer in a ventilated space, not a bedroom or office.
  • Heat: The nozzle and bed are hot enough to burn. Let parts cool before removing them.
  • Load-bearing parts: Don't print anything that holds a person, a ladder, or overhead weight.

FAQ

Will PLA parts survive in a work truck?

Often not. PLA softens at fairly low temperatures, and a closed truck in summer can warp it. Use ASA, ABS or nylon for truck parts.

Do I need an enclosed printer for ASA?

An enclosure helps a lot. ASA and ABS warp in drafts, and an enclosure with a heated chamber like the X2D's keeps them stable.

What is the build volume of the Bambu Lab X2D?

256 × 256 × 260mm, according to Bambu Lab's specs.
