Each store's rules win. Read the promotion terms before you pay; tiers, eligible kits and end dates change.
How free-tool promotions work
Several times a year the big stores run kit events: buy a qualifying battery kit and choose a free bare tool or battery from a list. Some events are tiered, where a bigger kit unlocks more or better free tools. The free item is added in the cart or at the register, so check the cart before you pay.
Right now we are tracking Lowe's DeWalt: buy a 20V battery 2-pack, get up to 3 free tools. Every live event is on today's deals.
Pick the highest-value free tool
- Read the full list of eligible free tools.
- Look up the regular price of each one.
- Pick the most expensive tool your crew will actually use. A free tool that sits in the box is worth nothing.
- When the free list includes a battery, compare it with the tools: on some platforms a high-output pack is the best value on the list.
Use a pro account
- Open the store's free pro program before you buy: Home Depot has Pro Xtra and Lowe's has MyLowe's Pro Rewards. They keep your purchase history for taxes, warranty and returns.
- For large orders, ask the pro desk for a volume quote before checking out.
- Veteran discounts can stack with some events; see how veterans verify at Lowe's and Home Depot.
Compare price per battery
A kit with two batteries often costs close to the two batteries alone, which makes the tool in the kit nearly free before the promotion even starts. Divide the kit price by the total amp-hours and compare it with buying packs separately.
When the best events run
The strongest events usually run from Black Friday through the holidays, with more in spring and around Father's Day. Get the alert so you hear about them the day they start.
