xTool buying guide

We use an xTool F2 to engrave our name and asset numbers on tools and batteries, which makes stolen tools harder to sell and easier to identify. This page explains what the F2 can and can't do for a trade shop, how to stay safe, and what the warranty covers. Settings from our own engraving jobs are added as our crews use the laser.

What a laser does for a tool crew

  1. Tool IDs. Engrave company name, phone and an asset number on every tool and battery. Thieves avoid marked tools, and pawn shops and police can identify them. Our register and track guide walks through it.
  2. Labels and tags. Anodized aluminum tags for PACKOUT boxes, panel labels and key tags.
  3. Shop signs and branding. Wood and acrylic signs, logo plates for the truck.

What it does not do

  • It is not a cutting laser for metal. It also won't cut thick plywood like a large CO2 laser.
  • It cannot engrave through the battery's plastic shell safely at high power; keep power low on plastic and never hit the cells. See the engraving guide for safe settings tests.

Safety notes

  • Eyes: Keep the lid closed during jobs. If you work with the enclosure open, wear laser safety glasses rated for both 445nm and 1064nm.
  • Fumes: Engraving plastics and coatings makes smoke. Vent outside or use a fume extractor. Never laser PVC or vinyl: it releases chlorine gas.
  • Fire: Don't leave a running laser alone. Keep a fire extinguisher next to it.
  • Batteries: Engrave on the plastic housing only, at low power, and test on a scrap housing first.

FAQ

Can the xTool F2 engrave stainless steel?

Yes. The 1064nm infrared laser marks stainless steel, aluminum, brass and titanium. It does not cut metal.

Is it safe to laser-engrave tool batteries?

It can be done on the plastic housing at low power with test runs first. Never engrave deep enough to touch the cells, and stop if the housing melts or smokes heavily.

How long is the xTool warranty?

The standard warranty is 1 year. xToolCare extends coverage to 24 or 36 months.

Can I use the F2 in a garage?

Yes, with ventilation. Vent fumes outside or use an extractor, and keep a fire extinguisher close.
