Ryobi buying guide
Ryobi is the green line at The Home Depot and one of the biggest homeowner tool systems in the country. Like Milwaukee and RIDGID power tools, it is made by TTI; the Ryobi name is used under license. On a crew, Ryobi shows up for specialty tools you only need a few times a year, outdoor cleanup and the "extra set" that stays at a client's property. This is a buying guide, not a crew review.

Which Ryobi platform fits your work
18V ONE+
ONE+ is the main draw. Ryobi has kept ONE+ batteries compatible across generations, so older packs generally fit newer tools. The HP brushless tools are the stronger versions. For daily commercial drilling and driving, most crews still prefer a pro platform, but ONE+ covers odd jobs well: glue guns, inflators, fans, lights, hot-glue, caulk, sprayers and many niche tools.
40V outdoor
For homeowners and light property maintenance, the 40V mowers, trimmers and blowers are a common way to go gas-free. Note the commercial warranty: if you use them for paid landscaping work, coverage drops to 1 year. If you run outdoor gear all day, see our trimmers and mowers comparison.
How to buy Ryobi without overpaying
- Home Depot runs "free tool with battery kit" events on ONE+ several times a year. Our deals page lists the live ones.
- Buy a kit with an HP battery if you will run saws or outdoor tools.
- Don't count on cross-brand compatibility: Ryobi batteries don't fit RIDGID or Milwaukee tools.

Warranty and service
Ryobi ONE+ tools and batteries carry a 3-year limited warranty, accessories 90 days, with a 90-day exchange at The Home Depot. 40V outdoor tools for consumer use are 5 years on the tool and 3 years on the battery and charger; commercial use is 1 year. Keep the receipt. For service, contact Ryobi customer service (1-800-525-2579) or use the service locator on ryobitools.com.
Safety note
Outdoor battery tools still throw debris. Wear eye and hearing protection with trimmers and blowers, and keep bystanders back about 50 feet.
Our take so far
Ryobi is not one of our main platforms. We only write crew notes about tools we actually use on jobs.
FAQ
Are old Ryobi ONE+ batteries compatible with new tools?
Generally yes. Ryobi built ONE+ around backward compatibility, so older ONE+ packs fit current ONE+ tools.
Is Ryobi good enough for professional use?
For specialty and light-duty tasks, many pros keep some Ryobi tools. For all-day drilling, driving and cutting, most crews run a pro platform. Note that 40V outdoor tools used commercially get only a 1-year warranty.
Who makes Ryobi tools?
TTI, the same parent company as Milwaukee, makes Ryobi tools under license.
